Photogravure is a photo-intaglio process where pigment ink is rubbed on a plate and thanks to the indentions in the surface that holds the ink, the image is transferred onto dampened paper with an etching press. With the direct-to-plate technique a high resolution positive image is printed with an Inkjet printer directly onto a UV sensitive steel-backed photopolymer photogravure plate. It is then exposed to UV light, washed with water and hardened. Therefor this environmentally sustainable printing method is completely non-toxic. The inking and final printing process is carried out by Daniela Lorenzi, art printmaker and founder of A14 (www.a14.br.com)
Our advanced understanding in color management, calibration processes, paper, hard- and software allow us to produce inkjet prints in archival quality that will ensure the best possible result. We print on a professional large format Epson printer using various calibration methods to achieve the best color fidelity possible and to keep a close match between the monitor and the paper. To achieve the widest range of colours and subtle graduations in black and white we use 11 inks (two grey inks and two black inks). Prints are carried out on a number of different archival papers, including matte, glossy, smooth and textured finishes. Advanced photoshop techniques including cloning, cleaning, curve adjustments and skin retouching are available. For more information on our range of paper please see the section Papers.
Images can be printed on a variety of papers as long as they are 100% cotton fibers, ph-neutral and without any additives and chemical treatments. The papers must be handmade or made with traditional techniques on cylinder molds.
We offer 100% Western cotton papers and Japanese entirely handmade light-weight Washi papers, which has been used in Japan for more than 1200 years and has been noted not only for its visual beauty, but also for its durability.
Torinoko Gampi (17 g/m²)
This handmade, 100% Gampi fiber, Japanese paper has a beautiful pearlescent finish. It is often referred to as “the king of paper” due to its long and very fine fibers. The Gampi bush, found in the mountainous and warm areas of Japan, cannot be cultivated and is therefore rare and the most expensive of the three Japanese fibers (Gampi, Kozo and Mitsumata). Gampi is ultra smooth, transparent, and slightly acidic, making it a contender to use with alternative processes.
Mitsumata (27 g/m²)
This 100% Mitsumata fibers Japanese paper handmade by So Kubota is considered to be the "feminine fibre", as it is softer and more pliable than Gampi. Mitsumata takes longer to grow and is indigenous to Japan. It is the most recently discovered of the Japanese fibers. It mainly grows in Shikoku and central Japan particularly on the north-facing slopes of mountain and valleys. This paper is known for its warm tone and for its finesse.
Tosa Hakkinshi #1, #2 (28 g/m²)
This paper is mainly made with Kozo fibers this paper has a smooth and lint-free surface. We offer two types of Tosa Hakkinshi papers: #1 is made of 70% Kozo and 30% Gampi, #2 is made of 80% Kozo and 20% Gampi.
Arches Platine (145 and 310 g/m²)
This natural white paper is made by Moulin d’Arches, a paper mill founded in 1492 in Vosges, France. This art paper is made with traditional techniques on cylinder molds. It is acid free and without alkaline reserve or optical brightening agents. Guaranteed 100% cotton.
Hahnemühle Platinum Rag (300 g/m²)
Hahnemühle Platinum Rag is an uncoated fine art paper designed to meet the highest quality requirements for non-traditional photographic printing processes. The natural bright white paper is made of 100% cotton fibers, is acid free and does not contain any alkaline buffering. Hahnemühle Platinum Rag excels with a beautiful tonal range and very deep blacks. The smooth, slightly textured surface lends the paper a pleasant feel-to-the-touch.
And many more
We are always on the research for new papers suitable for traditional printing process, as long as they are 100% cotton fibers, ph-neutral and without any additives and chemical treatments. Please let us know what kind of paper you are looking for and we will present you a wide range of papers than can be ordered on demand.
Numerous types of archival paper specifically designed for inkjet printing are available at our lab. We always stock Canson Photographique Rag, Museo Silver Rag and various Hahnemühle papers.
At our lab we also offer a professional scanning service. We can produce maximum quality scans in-house with our Imacon Flextight scanner from 35 mm up to 10x12 (4x5”). The scanner creates a glass-free optical path between the original and the lens. The patented virtual drum solution produces excellent focus on the entire original. The file outputs are 3F or TIFF. For larger negatives up to 20x25 we use a professional Epson flatbed scanner. Cleaning is an additional service upon request (removal of small imperfections that may remain on the negatives)
We collaborate with the best framers that can create handmade frames made of natural European oak, in fact they are neither coloured nor painted but left in their natural state. The oak is thermotrated, this treatment consists in bringing the material to 210 degrees stabilizing the structure and annihilating the vein tensions. In this way we obtain a stable and pasty material with a dark and very warm coloring. For keeping the joints of the frame tight, ebonized wood cores are used. All the frames can be made to measure. We use different types of high quality glass with less than 1% reflectance and a UV-protection that goes from 70% up to 99%, and are therefore conservative. We also create mounts using high quality conservative acid-free cardboards and tapes that will always ensure that your artwork is protected.
With roots in fashion and advertising we have a deep understanding of the visionary process and are able to deliver you high-end retouching for your photographic project that can be tailored to each photographer’s individual needs. We have gained years of experience in digital post- production and are specialised on all the interventions, with a particular eye on skin retouch. Our main focus is to keep retouching efficient but extremely natural. A good post production gives you a “pleasant feel” but never reveals the interventions that have been done.
